Attelabus nitens (Scopoli, 1763)
This attractively coloured weevil was found in small numbers (but quite commonly) on Birch and Oak trees around Budby Common and Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire in May 2006. It's common name is the Oak Roller Weevil and it belongs to the Attelabidae family. The males measure about 5mm in length, but the females are larger, at around 7-8mm. The single egg is laid near the edge of a leaf, the leaf is cut and rolled up to protect the developing egg.
