1968 Shelby Mustang GT500

This 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500 is one of 1,020 fastback examples produced for the model year, and it was built on February 19, 1968 and subsequently delivered to Ford’s Home Office. Power comes from a 428ci Police Interceptor V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission, and the car is finished in Acapulco Blue with white stripes over black vinyl upholstery. Features include a tilt-away steering column, a Ford AM radio, power-assisted steering and front disc brakes, and the Interior Décor and Visibility Group packages. The car was reportedly part of the John O’Quinn collection before it was acquired by the seller in November 2011, and work in 2021 included service of the air-conditioning system. This GT500 is now offered with a Standard Marti report, a maintenance log, and a clean Texas title in the seller’s name.

The GT500 was added to the Shelby American lineup in 1967, and design updates for 1968 included a shifted placement of the functional hood scoops, a revised grille opening with square fog lights, and Thunderbird-style tail lights. The body was refinished in its factory color of Acapulco Blue (D) during prior ownership according to the seller, who notes crack remediation was performed on the hood scoops.

Aluminum ten-spoke 15” wheels are wrapped in 235/60 BFGoodrich white-letter tires. The car is equipped with power-assisted steering as well as front disc and rear drum brakes.

The cabin features front bucket seats and a fold-down rear bench seat covered in black vinyl with knit inserts. The Interior Décor Group adds woodgrain trim to the dashboard, door panels, and center and overhead consoles, while the Visibility Group package includes under-dashboard courtesy lights and illumination in the glovebox, trunk, and engine compartment, along with a glovebox lock. A roll bar with inertia-reel seatbelts was standard in Shelby cars, and this example is also equipped with a Ford AM radio. The air-conditioning system was serviced in 2021 with a rebuilt compressor.

The two-spoke steering wheel is accented by woodgrain trim as well as Shelby Cobra badging, and it is mounted on a tilt-away steering column ahead of gauges including an 8k-rpm tachometer and a 140-mph speedometer. Approximately 70k miles are shown on the five-digit odometer, though total mileage is unknown.

The 428ci Police Interceptor V8 features die-cast aluminum valve covers and an air cleaner with Cobra logos, and it was rebuilt in October 2013 according to the seller. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a three-speed automatic transmission and a 3.00:1 open differential.
