Super typhoon Mangkhut is nearing the Philippines and is set to enter the country’s area of responsibility this afternoon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has announced.

But you don’t need experts to tell you that do you?

Those who managed to get up from their beds would know that the typhoon has made its presence known ahead of time with on-and-off rain showers since this morning.

Metro Manila’s roads are already pretty damp but there have been no reports of major flooding — yet.

The US Joint Typhoon Warning Center yesterday officially classified Mangkhut as a super typhoon, ABS-CBN News reported. However, PAGASA has not classified it as such.

According to PAGASA, the typhoon will be named Ompong once it enters the Philippine area of responsibility.

In its latest advisory, the agency said the typhoon is threatening the northern part of Luzon island including the Cagayan – Batanes area which may be hit this Saturday. It also said that a signal number 1 warning may be raised in the area by tonight.

It could also bring moderate rains and thunderstorms to other parts of the country including the Zamboanga Peninsula, Western Visayas, and Palawan by tomorrow.

Metro Manila will also experience cloudy skies with isolated light to moderate rains and thunderstorms, PAGASA weather forecaster Aldczar Aurelio told The Philippine Star.

Yesterday, officials warned that Mangkhut could cause Yolanda-like disasters.

“This is a pretty nasty typhoon to put it candidly, let’s not try it,” National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council spokesperson Edgar Posadas told CNN Philippines.

Yolanda was the 2013 typhoon internationally known as Haiyan that devastated parts of Visayas island including Samar and Leyte.

Stay safe and dry, everyone, this could be an intense one.
