The Volkswagen Rabbit was the precursor to the modern Volkswagen golf, a compact family car. As a fan of the 70’s to 80’s car designs, I immediately fell in love with this car. Not only was it marketed as a “family car,” but the Rabbit is still known to posses amazing off-road capabilities. You can even see the true potential of this car in the original 1976 commercial below. For the price at the time(only $3,500!), this vehicle was a great deal. The car is used today mostly as nostalgic reminders of the past, or dirt rally devils. A key part of what makes this car so agile, is its weight of 1,863 pounds. To give a weight comparison, the Honda Accord is about 3,300 pounds, the BMW 3 series is about 4,000 pounds, and the 2018 Volkswagen Golf is about 3,300 pounds. The rabbit displays the humble roots of Volkswagen and is today a vivid remnant of a distant past.
