What is a Toroidal Transformer?

A toroidal transformer consists of a ring-shaped (torus) ferromagnetic core, around which both primary and secondary copper coils are wound. Because of the symmetrical shape, toroidal transformers allow only a small amount of magnetic flux to escape the core as compared to standard laminate core products. This leads to better energy efficiency and lower EMI emission.

Standard E-I laminate transformers, on the other hand, are made from stamped sheets of ferromagnetic material which are stacked and laminated. The primary and secondary coils are wound onto separate sections of the core. In this configuration, the sharp bends in the flux path cause more of the magnetic flux to escape from the core, thereby lowering efficiency.

Advantages of Toroidal Transformers:

  • Higher efficiency
  • Lower operating temperature
  • Lower noise (transformer hum)
  • Smaller size, lighter weight
  • Lower stray magnetic field & EMI emission

LTF uses only high grade toroidal cores and quality electronic components in our full lineup of Low Voltage Magnetic Transformers
