    Ask the Community

    • Q:

What do you replace the egg and cheese and butter with to make the veggie boat vegan? We don't care if it is gluten-free, that has absolutely nothing to do with it being vegan.

      A:

We don't have vegan options. Milk and eggs are in the dough. At this point, we don't make gluten-free or vegan dough.

      Have you tried Khachapuri before?

Skalka in Downtown Seattle specializes in a traditional Georgian dish called Khachapuri.

Just imagine a soft yet chewy bread boat filled with all sorts of flavorful ingredient combinations, like cheese, egg, chicken ragu and more.

      We tried the:
      - Beef Stroganoff
      - Veggie
      - Chicken
      - Lobiani

Our favorite was the Lobiani with the banana peppers, bacon and red beans. The sweetness from the red beans and the tartness from the peppers makes for a rich and flavorful dip!

You'll also notice that there are just forks at the tables as the Khachapuri crust is meant to be torn by hand.

If you're visiting Downtown and the Pike Place Market area, head on over to Skalka for a unique and tasty meal!

Always wanted to try this place and finally made it! The 'khachapuri' , which looks like a breakfast pizza, was very yummy!

The place felt a little sterile after the pandemic with self ordering kiosk, water station, etc.

Although there weren't really any 'services' since you order yourself and you pick the food from the counter, but the tables weren't being cleaned quickly so it is available for the next guest.

Ordered the Lobiani with red beans which was great. Looking forward to coming back for the Veggie since the eggplant looks amazing on my friend's plate :).

Wish there was more drink options. But they had drip coffee, orange juice and canned soda.

Lobiani- red beans, egg, bacon, banana peppers, cheese....

Imagine this: It's a beautiful Saturday afternoon in downtown Seattle. I've just had a blast wandering around Pike Place Market, taking in the vibrant sights and sounds. As I stroll along the Seattle Waterfront, marveling at the majestic cruise ships, something catches my eye--a cozy little spot called Skalka. Curiosity piqued, I whip out my phone and turn to Yelp for the lowdown.

To my delight, I discover that Skalka is a haven of deliciousness, offering up an array of made-to-order bread boats that promise to warm the soul. And get this--they're a small business run by folks from Georgia (the country)! The mention of Khachapuri sends my taste buds into overdrive, reminding me of those mouthwatering promos I've seen on Evening Magazine.

Stepping inside Skalka, I'm greeted by a laid-back vibe and simple decor that feels just right for a morning meal, even though its 4 pm! The excitement builds as I picture sinking my teeth into a freshly baked bread boat, oozing with cheesy goodness and topped with a perfectly cooked egg--each one lovingly crafted by hand. With options like classic cheese, veggie-packed delights, and hearty beef stroganoff, there's something for every palate. Opting for the veggie boat, I'm treated to a burst of fresh flavors that hit the spot perfectly.

And let's talk about freshness--Skalka's dough is whipped up in small batches throughout the day, guaranteeing that every bite is as fresh as can be. No stale bread in sight!

Oh, and did I mention Skalka's claim to fame? They've been showered with praise from every corner, earning their spot as a true gem in Seattle's culinary scene.

So, whether you're in the mood for a leisurely brunch or a quick bite on the go, Skalka has got you covered. Don't let the time of day hold you back--swing by and experience the magic for yourself. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you later!

Forgot to post this review from recent Seattle travels. Skalka was bookmarked in my Yelp based on reviews and their menu intrigued me to try Eastern European cuisine. The location is slightly further past the touristy Pike Place Market, but within walking distance from downtown area. It's a clean, casual, bright eating place with dining area. I tried the stroganoff khachapuri and it was divine! The bread boat was freshly baked and all the components (including egg and pickles) perfectly complemented each other. There were alot of customers picking up their orders to go. I will remember to return during future travels here.

My friends and I came here on a Sunday afternoon for lunch and had a great time! We luckily didn't have to wait to find a seat, but it definitely got busier on our way out. Street parking is available in the area, but there is a decent sized paid parking lot nearby.

We ended up all getting different types, but I ordered the chicken. The food is very flavorful, and it was a great experience trying this cuisine for the first time.

Service was great and the staff were patient while we tried to decide what to order. You'll order at the front, and they'll give you a number they'll call later to pick up your food. When you're done, they ask you to throw it all away. They have a good-sized pizza-style box if you have leftovers you want to take home.

This is a great restaurant I'll definitely be coming back to when in the area! Don't forget to check in through the Yelp app for a free coffee!

      1 check-in

Nestled on the outskirts of Pikes Place in Seattle, Skalka offers a delightful culinary experience with a scenic backdrop that complements its unique approach to dining. The restaurant's commitment to delicious food and an innovative online ordering system makes it a standout in the bustling Seattle food scene.

One of the notable features of Skalka is its picturesque location, providing a charming escape from the urban hustle. The ambiance is perfect for those seeking a break from the Pike's Place touristy noise.

Skalka takes an unconventional approach to ordering, with the entire process conducted online. While this may be a novel concept, it does streamline the ordering process, ensuring efficiency and accuracy. However, this approach might not suit everyone, especially those who prefer a more traditional experience with face-to-face interaction.

The menu at Skalka boasts a variety of delectable options, showcasing a fusion of flavors that cater to diverse palates. The Chicken Boat seemed a bit overwhelming and a bit to ummm mushy. In hindsight, opting for the Cheese Boat alone might have been a wiser choice, as it allowed the individual ingredients to shine without the slight overcrowding observed in the Chicken Boat.

While the food at Skalka is undoubtedly a highlight, the service could use a friendlier touch. The online ordering system, while efficient, lacks the personal interaction that many patrons seek in a dining experience. A bit more warmth and engagement from the staff could elevate the overall satisfaction for guests. If the restaurant could enhance its service with a more personable touch, it would undoubtedly secure its place as a must-visit destination on the outskirts of Pikes Place in Seattle.

I wanted to try this place for a really long time after, and it didn't disappoint! Super flavorful and the bread was soft and had the perfect chew to it. We had the Lobiani and my wife had the Chicken. Both were amazing! I'm definitely coming back to try different ones, i had my eye on the Beef Stroganoff.

We arrived promptly at 9 when they opened on Sunday and they were ready. It was self order via computer, so we ordered our 2 adjarulis to get a solid meal in before our party of 5 flew out. The sign said 15 minutes, and our boxes were set out at 9:15 on the dot.
They come in pizza boxes, and they are heavy. The best thing to say is it is as good as advertised: soft crust that is perfect for dipping and scooping the cheesy, buttery, egg yolky amazingness. It is rich, and dense, one boat can feed multiple people, and probably would have been enough. It is kid friendly, all three of our kids loved it. In spite of all the butter and cheese, the bread isn't soggy which is shocking. This place is delicious, and was the perfect way to stuff our faces one last time in Seattle before heading home.

      I absolutely loved it.

I got the adjaruli which is a sort of bread bowl with soft, curdy cheese, fresh melted butter, and an egg yolk. It was so damn good.

The bread was very soft and fresh. They say all of their orders are cooked fresh by hand and I believe them. Freshly baked bread is a wonderful thing. It had a nice chew to it also.

To eat it you break off pieces of bread and dunk it in the cheese, butter, egg yolk mixture. It's so much fun. The mixture is good. Nicely salted. Definitely coats your mouth but it isn't too much. Pretty creamy and luxurious.

I enjoyed the novelty of this dish too.

It's not the sort of thing where there are complex flavors going around. More of a comfort food the way mac n cheese or grilled cheese is. But sometimes that is just perfect. I would go out of my way to return to Skalka if I lived in Seattle (and had a faster metabolism).
