Just like our affection for our own grandparents, it’s impossible not to love Abraham Simpson II, the father of Homer Simpson and the real patriarch of the Simpsons family. His stories are often fascinating (perhaps because of his uncanny knack for mixing truth with fiction) and he’s a character who you get excited to see appear on screen whenever he shows up in Springfield.
Abraham Simpson is clearly a personal character who means a lot to The Simpsons creator Matt Groening. He of course famously named many of the Simpsons characters after his own family (his own younger sisters are named Lisa and Margaret) and when it came to naming Grampa he didn’t necessarily want to use the name of his own grandfather Abraham, despite how much he was influenced by him.
But it was clearly meant to be as the Simpsons writers randomly picked the name in a meeting Matt Groening wasn’t involved with and he later couldn’t bring himself to change it!
