Using the commercial software VSim 9, a highly parallelized particle-in-cell/finite difference time-domain modeling code, the performance of an existing novel RFQ/RFI linac structure designed by Ion Linac Systems is evaluated. This effort is aimed towards having an up to date full 3D start-to-end simulation of the accelerator system, which does not exist currently. The structure used is an efficient 200-MHz, 2.5-MeV, CW-RFQ/RFI proton linac. The methods employed in VSim for modelling and parameter setup are presented, along with the simulation procedures for both the Electromagnetic and PIC solver. The important figures of merit for the structure are given including the Q-factor, field distributions, shunt impedance, and important beam properties. These are then contrasted with the initial design values and analytical calculations.

In this study, comparisons are made between several particle dynamics codes (namely CST Particle Studio [CST PS], General Particle Tracker [GPT] and PARMULT) for a specific accelerator system. The structure used for simulations is a novel 200 MHz, 2.5 Mev, CW RFQ/RFI LINAC designed by Ion Linac Systems (ILS) [1]. The structure models and parameters are provided, simulation techniques are explained, and results from all three code families are presented. These results are then compared with each other, identifying similarities and differences. Various parameters for comparison are used, including the transmission efficiency, Q-factor, E-field on-axis, and beam properties. Preliminary anchoring between modeling and simulation performance predictions and experimental measurements are also shown.

We discuss electromagnetic simulations of accelerating structures in a high performance computing (HPC) system. Our overarching goal is to resolve the linac operation in a large ensemble of initial beam conditions. This requires a symbiotic relation between the electromagnetic solver and HPC. The linac is being developed by Ion Linac Systems to produce a low-energy, high-current, proton beam. We use VSim, an electromagnetic solver and PIC software developed by Tech-X to determine the electromagnetic fundamental mode of operation of the accelerating structures and discuss its implementation at the THETA supercomputer in the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility.

The CW proton linac has a number of important applications; serving as the initial part of a high-energy, highpower linac for an accelerator-driven system is the main of them. Its CW operation mode and a 5-10 mA beam current however are limiting factors for the accelerating field. The surface field should not exceed the Kilpatrick field by more than 1.2-1.5 times. This limitation leads to the increase in linac length and beam bunching complexity. The first results of a 2 MeV, 5 mA, CW RFQ designed for the operating frequency of 162 MHz are discussed. Beam dynamics simulation results obtained by using the BEAMDULAC-RFQ code [1] are presented. The electrodynamics of the accelerating structure based on the fourvane cavity is discussed. The accelerating cavity design uses coupling windows as was proposed earlier [2], but with windows of an elliptical form. Such form allows for better separation of quarupole and dipole modes. AAA: A Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) linac delivering 800 keV, 5 mA protons has been designed. It is envisaged as first injector of the proton driver that will be used for production of proton-rich radioactive beams in the proposed ANURIB facility. The option of rod-type structure at frequency of 80 MHz has been chosen owing to ease of mechanical fabrications and to avoid detrimental nearby dipole modes present in vane type structure. Optimization of parameters has been carried out for a viable length and power of RFQ in order to avoid any infrastructural complexity. Conventional method of keeping focusing factor and vane voltage constant along the length of RFQ has been adopted. Results of detailed beam dynamics and RF structure design, space charge induced effects and corroborative particle tracking with realistic 3D fields of modulated vane has been presented.
