If you need extra stability, extend and secure the outriggers, lower the front blade and lift the entire structure into the air! The authenticity of this model is without bounds, right down to the detailed cab with seat, armrests, sun visor and adjustable mirrors. Upgrade with the LEGO Power Functions 8293 motor set (not supplied) and you have a fully motorized boom and working lights!     This kit was purchased as a gift for a brand new 8 year old. He's experienced with typical Lego build instructions, and his most advanced build to date has been a 31022 turbo quad ATV with simple rear suspension, and the 60101 cargo plane. So I was a little curious how this "10+" kit would work out.

    This is a long build for him. The illustrated instructions are as good as ever, and there are 400 steps if I remember correctly. It's a page turner, and he ran into at least one step where the required pieces were not specifically called out (step 47 if I recall correctly).

    A problem for younger builders is the required dexterity and hand strength to snap together pieces that engage four Lego "rivets" -- the round collared pieces that snap into the holes of the "beams." Those were frequent calls for help, along with finding the correct small pieces that were buried in the pile of over 1100 pieces this ships with.

    The end product is quite cool. This is my first experience with Lego pneumatics, and it works as advertised. For all the moving parts, the model is a bit wobbly, but it's sturdy enough to play around with without it breaking into two. We haven't build the optional articulated loader, nor have we purchased the optional motor kit to automate the pneumatic system.

    This is a fantastic model - lots of fun and very functional. I bought the electric motor functions set also and added that, which makes the pneumatic system run automatically and adds two very bright lights to the cab. Arguably it could have shipped with the electric motor set included, but that would probably have bumped the price up into a bracket that would have made it less attractive, and really it is great without it.

    I've seen side-by-side comparisons with other pneumatic digger sets (and I have the large AROCS truck myself with a digger) and this one is tougher and generally better at picking stuff up. I brought it into work to show the kids in my clinic (I'm a pediatrician) and they were all amazed.
