Editorial Reviews

Limited edition of 1000 individually numbered copies on swamp green coloured 180-gram audiophile vinyl. Just one year after unleashing their debut album Power And Pain, Whiplash were back with the follow-up Ticket to Mayhem. The band had experienced a few changes in the short interim between both albums. This album sounds somewhat cleaner, more mature and has a more professional "produced" sound.

WHIPLASH TICKET TO MAYHEM-THIS IS A CLASSIC IN THRASH AND A DEPARTURE FROM THE SAME OLD 80'S CONVENTIONAL STYLE WITH SPEED CONVICTION TWISTS AND TURNS CLASSICAL OVERTONES , EVEN A BALLAD. THE MUSIC IS STILL FRESH AFTER 25 YEARS. 10 STARS. THE MUSICIANSHIP IS TOP NOTCH THE GUITAR PLAYING IS ON POINT , THE DRUMMING IS SPECTACULAR AND THE BASS PLAYING IS SUPERIOR! DONT OVERLOOK THIS MASTERPIECE! TONY PORTARA PLAYS ORIGINAL RIFFS WITH SHREDDING CONFIDENCE,TONY BONO THE BASS PLAYER WHO PLAYS BASS LIKE NOONE BEFORE HIM IN THRASH METAL JUST KILLS IT WITH TASTE AND POWER. THE TOTALLY UNDERRATED DRUMMER JOE CANGELOSI ,WHO PLAYED ON KREATOR'S CAUSE FOR CONFLICT DISPLAYS BLINDING DOUBLEBASS DRUMMING AND PINPOINT ACCURACY AND AGGRESSION. TOGETHER THIS LP IS UNTOUCHED AND IS A TOTAL MASTERPIECE WORTHY TO BE ALONG SIDE WITH THE BEST OF THE BEST IN THRASH METAL!

I don't know how I overlooked this album in the 80s, but it is an outstanding record. I have "power and pain" as well as "insult to injury", and this bears them both. Imagine the vocals and energy of the debut whiplash album, but with better sound and production. "Burning Atlanta" is my favorite song here.

Amazing, old school. Looking for years the original long play, thanks for the digital media availability. Excellent band and amazing record!

While Whiplash were fairly well known in New York City and probably the surrounding suburbs, they did not catch fire nationally with the exception of die hard metal heads who heard of them through word of mouth or after a good review in a magazine, as I did in the late great Creem in one of their metal issues from way back. Although the album reviewed was the first, after the writer said Whiplash was furious and for those who liked their whiskey straight and their coffee black, I remembered the review and found an album copy of "Ticket To Mayhem". What I got was a proto-thrash/death masterpiece, largely ignored and underrated by the metal community. When I ordered the CD much later, I was pleased that "Power and Pain", the first album was included. While that album is good metal, fast and furious, Whiplash really carved a niche with "Ticket To Mayhem".
The triple Tony's were on a mission and that was one of destroying posers as thoroughly as General Sherman burned Atlanta, and they include a song called "The Burning of Atlanta", hence the reference. Vocalist Tony Porcaro, also the guitarist, leads the proceeding in a gnarly rasp, and after the opening war sounds of "Perpetual Warfare", "Walk The Plank" opens up like a bombing raid on your head. This is precise, ultra fast thrash that had it been released later would be considered death metal, and one that really shows just how closely the two genres are.
"Eternal Eyes" is another scorcher, and "Snake Pit" is some of the fastest brutal thrash/death you'll ever hear.
Whiplash played for keeps, took their craft seriously and were not for sissies. I don't know if they're still together, but the metal world needs to investigate this band and give them the credit they deserve for being pioneers of the extreme metal we dig today.

Whiplash's TICKET TO MAYHEM record is one of the most underappreciated thrash-metal masterpieces out there. With a diverse range of styles, from the intensely psychotic "Walk the Plank" to the all-time great "The Burning of Atlanta", not to mention many other cool and innovative tracks, this is as essential to your thrash music library as anything the Big Four ever produced. New Jersey's Whiplash is one of the more underrated thrash bands of the golden era. With their breakneck riffs, nice (and audible I might add) bass work, and outstanding double bass work, 1987's Ticket To Mayhem proved, you don't need ultra heavy riffs to create a thrash classic. Others will argue Power and Pain, the band's debut, will always be their best work. "Perpetual Warfare" starts off the intro with the sound of a modern battlefield...exactly what the thrash scene was in the mid 80s. "Walk The Plank" explodes on the scene with a simplistic solo and some insane speed is built throughout the track. "Last Nail In The Coffin" is melodic and the Whiplash version of a ballad. One of the better tracks off the album. "Drowning In Torment" is off a little bit. It starts with some great double bass work but falls too soon to the mid-paced slump before picking up speed again, then into another mid-paced slump. This track will wear on you. Luckily "The Burning Of Atlanta" makes up for the lack of speed. Its thrash the way thrash was meant to be played. Easily the best song on the album. "Eternal Eyes" rips open with a Slayer(ish) solo. Its driven by a catchy riff and powerful bass work. "Snake Pit" a lot like the fifth track, it is one of the more thrashier tracks. The riffs hits you like a chainsaw. The drum work...might be a strain to listen after awhile without losing interest. "Spiral Of Violence" starts off promising but only reaches a few high points. The galloping riff during the breakdown will have you banging your head, the lyrical delivery is almost embarrassing. The solo, however, is executed nicely. "Respect The Dead" probably the fastest song on the album. The drum work once again gets a little annoying with the cymbals but its not a major handicap.

Overall, Ticket To Mayhem has a lot going for it in 1987. With a decent production job for that year as well, this album still remains a cult classic in the thrash realm. Not the best from '87, but Top 10 material, yes. The album only has two things going against it, corny vocals and lyrics (at times) and repetitive riffs and bass work. Still, doesn't score less than a four and is one of the best albums from the East Coast. Thrash fans? I recommend this. Other genres....maybe but check them out.
