The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) is planning to lower the age of its #breastcancer screening recommendations for women at average risk. In a draft statement released on Tuesday, the Task Force recommends mammography every other year from age 40 to 74 years -- a 'B' grade. This woman is mad as hell about the state of women’s healthcare. That’s right. Pissed. And determined to make it better, starting with spotlighting some of my brilliant friends who are using design to eradicate cervical cancer, connect women to life-saving clinical research, and overhaul the system that flat out ignores women’s–and especially women of color’s–needs. Male bodies have been the default in everything from crash test dummies to medical research. In fact, it wasn’t until 1993 that women were required to be part of clinical research. 1993 . . . just 30 years ago. We have decades of work to make up for the broken system that leaves women more likely to die from heart attacks, wait years for a diagnosis, and have our pain dismissed by doctors.
