SKARDU AIRPORT - ADDITIONAL RUNWAY OPERATIONAL Between Sep 2019 and Aug 2023, a new runway was constructed at Skardu Airbase. The runway length is about 3.2 km and width about 45 m. The new runway is much wider than the existing runway. This video from google earth shows the timelapse of the construction in 4 years, infrastructure of the base, blast pens for military aircraft, a commercial aircraft, a mil heptr, a mil transport aircraft at the base and a UAV on the new runway. I had some very interesting conversations in the last couple of days about how the Corvo PPDS, a UAV designed as a low cost, low observability, last echelon logistics supply aerial platform, could be used beyond what it was initially designed for. One of the use cases that came up again and again was as a flying testbed. It's design and construction means that it is very easy to cut holes in it to add sensors, or antennas, run wires, install Edge compute modules etc.. Once the testing in completed you can simply fold up a new wing or fuselage and then use that for the next flight. You don't need expensive test platforms, you need the right flight control system in an affordable airframe and you can save a huge amount of time, effort and money. #dstl #army #innovation #uav #uas
