Sikorsky Aircraft's "Cypher" was a groundbreaking UAV design in the late 1980s. With coaxial rotors inside a torus-shaped airframe, this design improved handling safety and increased lift. The Cypher prototype was first flown in 1988 and led to a true flight prototype, powered by a compact Wankel engine. After over 550 demonstration flights for the US government, the Cypher proved to be a versatile platform that could carry a sensor package or transport up to 50 lb of cargo. This groundbreaking design ultimately led to the next-generation Cypher II, which competed in the United States Navy VT-UAV competition. #UAV #aviationhistory
