Quick question out of the two which would be better. For my boy, he has an old 8800 GTX which keeps getting display driver failed. Still works downloaded newest drivers but worried card might be failing.
I can get 4850 for 184.00 plus 30.00 rebate (if I get rebate) For 154.00 maybe.

Personally i would go for the 4850, I dont know what motherboard he is using as I assume that the specs listed are yours otherwise I would have said, with an intel motherboard he would have the option to Xfire at a later stage, performance wise there is not a lot in it but the 4850 has i feel more driver improvements in the making, where as the 9800GTX+ just appears to be more of a "stop gap" solution for NVidia.

When I was shopping for an upgrade to my old 3850, I looked at alot of reviews comparing the 2. The impression I got was the 4850 does overall have a slight performance advantage.

Where they tend to fall down is the 9800GTX+ has a better standard cooling solution.
Then again, with fan control being built into the next CCC, that should be less of an issue.

If I was in your shoes, if a 9800 could be found on special, I'd look at it; but at the same price, the 4850 looks better.

Whats the warranty like on your son's 8800 GTX? If it's still in effect, RMA it. You might get a free, or greatly reduced, current offering in exchange depending on the company. Worth checking.

Just to make a note the extra six bucks for stepping up from a 8800 gtx to a 4850 is worth it.

Well 4850 it is. :)

For the one that said why spending so much. I like the brand names that worked for me. Loyal I guess to a point. But also I was late leaving for work. ( never had any problems with things from Asus & Gigabyte) so I would pay a little more for those two.

For warranty its long gone that 8800 GTX has been passed down from my computer to wifes to his. (hell I paid 600.00 for the dam thing) for that price you would think I could keep passing down.

Thanks again guys time to go shopping. (I put a Asus EAH 4850 in daughters I'll start there)

Ah... Was just wondering if it was still an option. When I registered my new GTX 260 with EVGA I saw my 20 month old 8800 GTX was still listed as available for RMA on my account with them (along with my four year old 7800 GS AGP!). EVGA is great that way.

4850 hands down. Go for it over the 9800.

Besides personal preference, why the 4850 over the 9800?

Don't let that PhysX BS bet to ya. Its never gonna take off. I foresee maybe 1 or 2 games using it in the future if that! HD 4850 ftw, I freakin love mine!

Ok, you love your HD4850, that is pretty much exptect, but what does it offer over the 9800GTX+?

I only make this post simply because I hate people making posts with virtually no information. Simply stating one over the other doesn't really help, give reasons behind those decisions, even if that reason is simply personal preference.

In the end, the 9800GTX(no +) is virtually tied in performance with the 4850.source The 9800GTX+ performs better than both, but the difference will be unnoticed in everything except benchmarks. So, like I said, OP go with whichever you find cheaper, they are both great cards, and you won't be disappointed with either.

Ah... Was just wondering if it was still an option. When I registered my new GTX 260 with EVGA I saw my 20 month old 8800 GTX was still listed as available for RMA on my account with them (along with my four year old 7800 GS AGP!). EVGA is great that way.

Thats is eVGA's lifetime warranty for you. If the card is from BFG, XFX, or eVGA he should really check the warranty, as it is likely the card had a lifetime warranty.

I didn't think the HD4850 really offered that much of a performance difference when AA is enabled over the 9800GTX+.

HD 4850 all the way. Its more powerful at most apps, cuts power to just one six-pin, and has CCC feature of course that makes ATI feature-packed. the 9800GTX+ has CUDA PhysX which is useless cause there isn't really that many apps that support CUDA anyway.

Either way, now that games are starting to erupt from the Xbox platform, I agree with Scrizz that its best to stack up with an HD 4850X2 or HD 4870X2 if your bank is up for it.

4850 VS 9800 GTX +

Edit:

Viczulis, if you want my personal opinion. The 9800 GT is blatantly slower than the 4850, however the GTX+ variation is on par with the 4850. Measuring the performance difference between them would be difficult as it the difference is insignificant and varies depending on the game.
However it is clear that your current 3870 X2 performs just as fast as the two other graphics cards in question and hence upgrading to either a 9800 GTX+ or 4850 would be pointless and any benefit would be negated. I would recommend that you keep your existing 3870 X2.

Edit 2:

its not going in my computer its for my boys computer. He has a 8800 GTX on its last leg. I'm debating on just getting him a new card or giving him my card and me moving up to a 9800 GX2 or higher. My first post was the two cards for his. But I think i'm beyond that now.

The 8800 GTX is a good contender and its almost as fast as the Nvidia 9800 series. You say its on its last legs do you mean graphically or has it fallen ill due to over clocking etc? I'd definitely give your current 3870 X2 to your son and purchase an 4850, 9800+ GTX or an 4870 X2 you want further longevity.

I think a GTX260(216) would be a good upgrade from an HD3870x2. Some of the pre-overclocked versions are already almost identical in performance to a GTX280.

On a side note: Are you interested in selling that 8800GTX for cheap?

And getting back my old 8800 GTS and selling that one. He usually gets my hand me downs after it goes through my family. lol Cant beat free, right.
