Rwanda’s most famous critic of President Kagame may soon be freed from prison after extensive lobbying by Washington.
The rendition and imprisonment of Paul Rusesabagina, who was portrayed as a hero in the 2004 film Hotel Rwanda and is serving a 25-year sentence, has drawn unflattering international attention to the president’s human rights record.
Kagame, who has ruled since the end of the genocide in 1994, revealed that his attitude had softened markedly towards the 68-year-old activist, a permanent US resident. Last year he accused the United States of bullying after Rusesabagina was designated “wrongly detained” by Washington and Antony Blinken, the US secretary of state, directly raised concerns over the fairness of his trial.
