I have a strange six degrees of separation to The Ramones. I was fortunate enough to know amazing Rock photographers who were friends and worked with my parents when I was younger because of my upbringing in the music business. This is not taken by Chalkie Davies (who allows me to use his photos often as reference for my pieces) or the amazing Roberta Bayley , whose work I love! I can’t find the photo credit for this image but, I wanted to approach this piece as if Joey had sat for a portrait for me.
He is such an interesting subject. There is a softness to this image. He is not on stage and there’s no movement to the piece but I wanted to capture the beauty of the moment the photographer snapped this shot of him. I still think my Grandpa Cash should have done a Ramones song on one of his American Recordings sessions. Anyone that knows me and my family knows how we feel about The Ramones and I’m glad I finally painted one of them.
