Parghelia is one of a string of small coastal towns in the province of Vibo Valentia which are together known as the Coast of the Gods. This 50km stretch of the Tyrhennian coast is renowned for its Caribbean-style long sandy beaches and crystal clear turquoise waters, and it's easy to understand why it also has the alternative name of the Beautiful Coast.
The whole section of coastline winds around a rocky outcrop, with rugged scenery dropping into the sea revealing dozens of beaches and coves, large and small. Parghelia itself has a permanent population of only around 1,400 people, and is notable for its lofty position high above the sea, offering spectacular panoramic views.
The sandy beach is accessible by foot, and is set in a small rocky cove with shallow waters ideal for snorkelling. There are several good hotels in the immediate area, along with full resort hotels with all facilities, but for restaurants, bars and other amenities the town of Tropea is only a couple of kilometres away. Tropea is the largest and busiest of the towns on this part of the coast, yet still retains a timeless sleepy atmosphere. The old town is full of winding narrow streets leading to quiet piazzas flanked by bars and trattorias. Tropea also has a station on the local railway line to allow connections with other parts of Calabria.
