Description

The name ‘Shepherd’s Purse’ is derived from the shape of the seed, resembling a purse. Very prolific. Cultivated ground, waysides and meadows.

Flowers

The flowers are tiny, in clusters, with 4 petals and 6 stamens.

Leaves

Spatulate broad end of the leaf tapers to the point of connection with the plant stem. Basal rosette, broad end of the leaves tapers to base, serrated margins.

Fruits Seeds

Silique: two fused carpels, heart-shaped or triangular and flat.

Edible

Rosette leaves when young, raw or cooked. Roots and seeds as condiment.
